Worldwide, approximately 74 000 people annually are diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, the most common and aggressive brain tumor. The survival rates are very poor and after 2 years only 10-25 % of the patients are alive. It is important to urgently find more effective treatments to improve the outcome of these patients.
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a herpes virus and infects 70-100 % of the worlds’ population and may contribute to cancer development. We have recently found that CMV infects 99 % of glioblastoma tumors. We have also seen that the CMV infection level in the tumor is a prognostic factor for patient survival. Anti-viral drugs against CMV are available and may improve the outcome of patients with glioblastoma. A the moment it is not clear how they should be used in the most effective way. An already performed study on the safety and the effectiveness of anti-viral drugs is under evaluation. We think that medication against CMV may become a new effective treatment strategy for people suffering from brain cancer. A larger clinical trial is needed to define how these drugs can help patients more efficiently.
We would like to perform a large international clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of drugs that can beat brain cancer. We are in great need of additional financial support and aim to raise 1 000 000 SEK. Thank you for helping us improve life!
