International Collaborations

CMM is strategically situated in between the Karolinska University Hospital and the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden’s two largest medical institutions.

The scientific focus of CMM, to understand and improve the care of chronic common diseases, is nonetheless an international issue. The prevalence (the total number of individuals with a specific disease divided by the total number of individuals) of the chronic common diseases in focus at CMM are similar in all countries with a modern life style. Researchers at CMM thus share their research interests with a large number of colleagues all over the world. To take advantage of the knowledge generated at other research sites and to contribute to the research area, CMM researchers work within extensive international networks both on a group basis and in different consortia.

Consequently, CMM welcomes many international guest researchers each year and in return many CMM-based researchers spend time at other international research centers. The mobility occurs at all levels: PhD students, post-docs, senior scientists and invited lecturers. At present, more than 30 nationalities are represented within CMM.

CMM has also actively taken part in the establishment of a sister organization, CMM Tianjin (CMMTJ) in China. CMMTJ will, like CMM, be a center of translational research, forming a bridge between basic medical research (Tianjin Medical University and the Nankai University) and clinical medical research (CMMTJ has affiliations with the seven regional academic hospitals in Tianjin). CMM’s future aim is to establish collaborative research projects in areas of mutual interest.
