Allergisk astma – Grönneberg

Allergic asthma is an inflammatory airway disease characterised by bronchial hyperreactivity to a variety of stimuli such as inhaled allergens. We are interested in early inflammatory events in allergic asthma, to identify key components which could be used as disease markers, diagnostic tools or as targets for future treatments. For this reason, bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and bronchial biopsies is performed before and after the induction of an allergic inflammation, using an allergen challenge method. A low-dose allergen inhalation model, resulting in a subclinical inflammation in patients, is used. This model was originally described by our group at the Karolinska University Hospital and is believed to mimic a natural exposure for the allergen. Cells and soluble components such as cytokines in the BAL fluid are retrieved and analysed. Specific aspects of the inflammation that are investigated include T-regulatory cells, inflammatory signaling pathways, proteomics, exosome profile, neurotrophins and exhaled NO.
