At CMM the research is divided into four research areas;
Inflammatory diseases include rheumatic diseases, psoriasis and multiple sclerosis as well as other disease where the immune system inadvertently causes chronic inflammation and loss of functions. New therapies are currently revolutionising the care of these diseases, and CMM is in the forefront in the development and use of such therapies.
CARDIOVASCULAR AND METABOLIC DISEASES
Cardiovascular diseases include ischemic heart disease, stroke as well as a number of conditions caused by disturbed functions in our blood vessels. These diseases are among the most common in all populations in the world, and CMM scientists are today world leading in creating improved understanding of why these diseases occur, and how they can be prevented.
Genetic diseases, encompasses studies of a number of diseases with a very strong genetic component. Different forms of cancers, malformation diseases, diseases of the endocrine system and myopathies are included. Defining the underlying genetic defects and the way that they results in disease impacts both disease prevention strategies as well as care.
NEUROGENETICS AND PSYCHIATRIC DISEASES
Neuropsychiatric diseases, like depression, drug addiction and others are serious and debilitating conditions where genetic predispostition in combination with environmental factors form the underlying cause of disease devlopment. The understanding of their background and the mechanisms involved can today be turned into efficient therapies and preventive strategies.
