The focus of CMM research has since the beginning been common and currently chronic diseases. Many of these diseases, including rheumatic diseases, psoriasis, MS, cardiovascular diseases and neuropsychiatric diseases such as depression and drug addiction can today be studied and understood using a combination of clinical investigation and modern bioscience present at CMM.
Sweden´s health care system, CMM:s proximity to the clinical care units and its equal proximity to basic science units at Karolinska Institutet have created an internationally unique opportunity to understand the origins, diseases mechanisms and outcomes of these diseases, and thus also new opportunities to develop prevention and targeted therapies. Our strategy is also to combine competence from the 42 research groups of CMM to foster interdisciplinary research, for example regarding understanding of how inflammation may lead to cardiovascular disease and how the immune system interacts with the brain.
