Junior Investigator Award to Carmen Gerlach

Assistant Professor Carmen Gerlach, Team Leader at CMM, will receive funding during six years from the Swedish Cancer Society (Cancerfonden) for her research regarding T cells. These immune cells play a central role in protecting the body against infections and cancers and based on their specific properties and functions they can be classified into many different subsets.

Carmen and her Research Team at CMM focus their work particularly on the different CD8 T cell subsets, aiming to understand how they arise and what mechanisms underlie the specific properties such as expression of cell surface receptors, their production of inflammatory and cytotoxic mediators, their anatomic localization, and their migratory behavior.

In order to answer these basic science questions, which are highly relevant for the future development of more efficient and specific immune therapies, Carmen’s Team combines several state-of-the-art single-cell technologies.

Junior Investigator Award is a grant by which the Swedish Cancer Society funds the position of a successful and promising researcher who has held a PhD title for less than seven years. We are happy to congratulate Carmen Gerlach for this appointment.
