Autoimmunity

Autoimmune diseases occur when the body’s immune reactions are directed towards its own tissue. For example, antibodies that are supposed to protect the body from external microbes act incorrectly by targeting the body’s own tissue.

These diseases most commonly affect people who have reached adulthood, but they may also break out in any time in life. Women suffer more often than men from autoimmune diseases.
