Genetics

In genetics one tries to understand how the genome in comprised (the genetic material: chromosomes, DNA and genes), in what way it is inherited and how it is affected by the surrounding environment. When the genome is changed it is called a mutation, and as these drive evolution they can be beneficial. But mutations may also be harmful and cause diseases. Many mutations in the genome go unnoticed since they do not affect the organism at all.

In order to apply this knowledge different methods are used, collectively termed genetic engineering. With the help of genetic engineering it is possible to determine at a molecular level which genes have mutated, and on what gene location the mutation has occurred. This knowledge can be used to find answers to what causes different diseases.
